"You seem reluctant," Julien commented.
"I'm not. Things are fine," Shelmaine replied, though her tone lacked conviction.
Julien didn't look away, his expression unwavering. "Shelly…"
He didn't call her by her full name or refer to her as his cousin-in-law. He called her Shelly as if their relationship hadn't changed at all.
"Julien," she responded, her throat tightening, "you're Samuel's cousin, and I'm his wife. That's the reality, and for that, I owe you an apology."
"Is that all you have to say to me?" He let out a bitter chuckle. "Just an apology?"
"That's all. Seeing you doing so well now makes me happy. It really does. I hope you stay healthy and find someone who's right for you," Shelmaine said sincerely.
Julien's gaze lowered, and his lips curved into a faint, involuntary smile. "I hope the same for you. I want you to live peacefully and happily, Shelly… and for Tammy, too. If Samuel ever treats you poorly or does something unforgivable, you can come to me. Anytime."
