I wrapped my arm around Caleb's shoulders, trying to offer what little comfort I could. The toy car clutched in his small hand seemed like a fragile lifeline to his Father, Taylor, who lay in the operating room.
I understood what he was thinking. We were all in the same shoes, but he must have felt it more. It was painful to see his dad wheeled into the operating room. All hopes were high for his recovery.
I looked at the door of the room and prayed that everything went well. Crystal looked so pale. She had worked herself up for this, making it easier for Caleb and me to bear the ill circumstance.
"Is he going to be fine?" Caleb asked in a low tone.
I looked at him, not revealing what I had been thinking. I couldn't be unsure in front of his son.
"It's going to be okay, sweetie," I whispered, attempting to reassure him. "Your dad is going to be just fine. Give me that smile, baby."
Caleb managed to curl his lips and let a smile escape.
