"How sure are you that he's going to give you the cure, even after you marry him?" Damian asked, and the question threw me off a bit. It was something that had lingered in my mind ever since I silently decided to accept Charles' blackmail.
But my shoulders merely rose and fell in a slight shrug as I exchanged looks with Crystal.
"I'm not going to take any chances."
"Marie, please listen to me," he said, his gaze so soft that it was almost impossible to control the tears that sprang to my eyes.
"You can't marry that man. We can always find another way."
"Amelia's dying," was all I could say before the lump in my throat interfered. I was grateful for Crystal's firm but gentle grip on my shoulder as she stood slightly behind me.
"I understand that," Damian replied in a calm voice laced with an emotion that made me feel even worse.
"I can't wait until we find another way; it might already be too late by then."
He nodded and breathed in deeply.
