CHAPTER 192: HE DOESN'T HATE ME
MARIE
"Marie, you need to take a break."
The nurse's voice barely registered as I sat slumped on the chair, my body pressed against the cold, hard edge of Angela's hospital bed. I had been here all night, watching her slight chest rise and fall, hoping and praying that she'd pull through.
"Marie?" the nurse repeated, gently touching my arm. We'll take care of her. It's morning now. Go home and freshen up."
I nodded, too exhausted to argue, though leaving Amelia felt like abandoning her. My heart twisted in my chest, but I managed to stand, glancing one last time at my daughter's pale face before dragging myself out of the room. The nurse gave me a kind smile as she promised, "We'll call you if anything changes."
I stepped into the crisp morning air, barely feeling it. My mind was numb, my body moving robotically as I went home. Claire, the nanny, was waiting at the door when I walked in, her concerned eyes meeting mine.
"How is she?" she asked, her voice soft but tense.
"Fine."
