Chapter 31: A Record of Battles
Townsend’s comment made Charles, who was already angry, even more furious. Charles shot a challenging look at Townsend.
“You’re asking if we know each other? Of course we do! She’s my Duchess, my wife. It’s just that we kept our marriage so low-key.”
Alicia never expected to hear Charles call her his wife. Meanwhile, Townsend’s gaze darted between Alicia and Charles. He couldn’t believe that the husband of the girl he liked was someone he knew. This circle was indeed small—no matter how far you went, you always ended up knowing the same people.
Unfazed, Townsend met Charles’s eyes head-on. He didn’t want to lose face in front of the girl he liked, especially when it was crucial to his chance of winning her over.
“I think keeping your marriage low-key was a smart move,” Townsend said, his voice calm. “That way, when Alicia divorces, not too many people will know she was ever married.”
Charles turned his icy gaze toward Alicia. When he spoke again, his voice was thick with sarcasm.
