Avery knelt in front of Mason, holding a pair of socks. "Lift your foot," she said.
Mason stared at her, frozen. She was so much younger than him, yet here she was, taking care of him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
At that moment, Mason's heart felt an overwhelming tug in his heart. No one had ever done something like this for him. Maybe, when he was a child, his mother had, but it was a memory too distant to recall.
When he didn't move, Avery sighed, shot him a quick look, and grabbed his ankle. In just a few swift motions, she slid the socks onto his feet, all while acting as though it was no big deal.
What Avery didn't realize was the storm of emotions she had stirred in Mason. Her simple gesture left him completely undone. If she had asked him for anything right then, even his life, he would have handed it over without a second thought.
After finishing, Avery gently patted his ankle. "There, all done. Now you'll get better faster."
