The first few days after Kathy arrived were tense. I avoided her like the plague, staying as far away from her office as possible. But, of course, fate wouldn’t let me off that easily. Fate was genuinely terrible to me. Aside from taking my dream man away from me, I found myself staring into the eyes of Mrs. Stewart, who continued to click her tongue at me.
“Didn’t you hear?” Mrs. Stewart asked in her hoarse voice, which sounded like gravel being poured, a quality she had apparently possessed for years before I even came to the office.
“No, I didn’t hear,” I said nervously, letting out a chuckle. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get that.”
“The boss wants to see you,” she said, “and bring in the report you’re working on. Make it quick.”
Of course, I didn’t make it quick. After Mrs. Stewart left and headed back to her office, which was in front of our head of department’s office, I took as long as possible, slowly preparing things on my desk and walking at a snail's pace to Kathy’s offic
