“She's dead,” he said, his expression grim. “And the worst part is that I saw it. I saw her death. I knew it was coming but I couldn't change it. All I could do was watch and wait, which is the worst part of all.”
“I'm so sorry to hear that,” I said.
“Not you, Talia. Fate can sometimes be cruel, especially to those who believe in it with all their strength. I believed in it. It's a part of me that hates fate right now. I can't say much about it, but perhaps it helped me understand something,” he said.
“Do you think you'll find another?” I asked softly.
He shook his head. “There aren't many chances available, Talia,” he said with a bitter laugh. “Perhaps someday fate won't be so cruel, but for many people, fate can be terrible, and I find myself as one of them. I'm a victim of fate,” he said, his voice heavy with resignation. “It's rather unfortunate,” he added.
We went back to work and returned to the cottage with arms full of herbs.
