Chapter 363: Groaning of a Would-be mother

“It’s okay, little one,” she murmured, rocking him gently. “We’re going to get there soon. I promise. Just a little longer.”
But even as she said the words, doubt gnawed at her. What if they didn’t make it? What if the car finally gave out, leaving them stranded in the middle of the desert with no water, no food, and no hope?
No. She couldn’t think like that. She had come too far to turn back now.
She kissed the top of his head, inhaling the faint scent of him—a mix of sweat, milk, and that sweet, new-baby smell that always managed to calm her nerves. She hadn’t even realized when it had crept up on her, but she knew she loved it either way. Then, with one last look at the endless stretch of road ahead, she strapped him back into the seat and returned to the front.
