Maldonia’s interior was what I would call a rainforest. Mostly humid, it prompted me to take off my outer cloak, revealing my bare arms. It wasn't half bad. In a way, it reminded me of the Witch’s Forest—though that chapter wasn’t exactly closed. Still, I couldn’t ignore the sharp inhale Avario made when I took off my jacket. He said nothing for about thirty minutes as we journeyed further inland.
"We're going to have to walk all the way to the capital city—or, rather, the capital tribe," he said, finally breaking the silence.
"Why?" I turned toward him.
He shook his head, a grim look settling on his face. "Let's just say the former alpha made a mess of things, and my uncle didn’t exactly keep all the tribes together like he should have. It’s turned into a basic free-for-all, with everyone thinking they can do whatever they want."
His brows furrowed deeply, his face tightening in anger.
"So, is that what you're going to fix?" I asked.
