I shook my head and walked over to him, reaching out to gently touch his now-wet face with the tips of my fingers. “No,” I said, shaking my head. “You will not lose me.”
“Then why did the prophecy say that?” he asked, stepping closer until my belly touched him and then closing the door behind him. “Why do you think you want to leave me?” His tone was filled with such pain that it was heart-wrenching. Even though I could barely grasp the full gravity of his question, his voice conveyed enough anguish to break my heart.
“I don’t want to leave you,” I said, looking up into his eyes. “Honestly, I don’t think I’d survive a minute on my own without you.” I raised my hand to my neck, trying to dramatize my feeling of being suffocated. “I just need a bit of breathing space. It feels like I’m trapped.”
