KIMBERLY'S POV
I stared at Xavier, forgetting to breathe for a second. Had I heard him right? His parents… didn't like him? The words just didn't fit him. He was always so sure of himself-as if the world bowed down in obeisance to his very presence. And his own parents didn't want him-the resigned tone in his voice-settled like some weight.
I scowled, my eyes on his fingers idly tapping against his knee. "Why do they not like you?" I asked, the words hushed.
Xavier smirked, his head leaning to his side. "Madam, are you sure you would want to know? Once I tell you, then later on, you can't divorce me."
I blinked. "Then don't tell me," I said in a flash.
A second of silence, then he burst out laughing. Deep and rich, the sound was. "Unbelievable," he muttered, shaking his head. Before I knew it, he'd reached for my cheeks and pinched both together between his fingers.
"Xavier!" I swatted at his hands, but he just chuckled, holding on as if playing with a stress ball.
