Xina was shocked at how quickly Cyan accepted her words. She had been prepared for a lengthy explanation, her mind running over a dozen ways to convince Cyan about the bracelet. Gary had warned her that the bracelet was almost like an heirloom to Cyan’s people—certainly not something you handed over lightly. But here Cyan was, listening without skepticism, her warm eyes betraying no doubt, no disdain.
“There must be something you need from me,” Cyan mused, bending her equine legs to sip from the river, her movements smooth and graceful. The water sparkled under the sunlight, clear enough that Xina could see the stones at the bottom. “Otherwise, the King would not have permitted your visit.”
Xina watched, momentarily distracted by Cyan’s elegance, and responded, “You gave me your bracelet before.” She looked at the ornate bracelet now encircling Cyan’s slender wrist.
