She Must Be A Spy!

••• Hayden’s POV ••• I went home feeling confused and frustrated. I went straight to my study, sat down, and loosened my tie. My mind was filled with the scene of the banquet. How did an orphan she-wolf suddenly become a powerful Alpha? Why did she lie to me in all the years that they had been together? What was her motive for lying to me? Suddenly I remembered her words. If I had known, would I have loved her when I knew she was an Alpha? I would, of course, treat her differently, with much more respect, but would I fall for her? I didn't have an answer to that. Thinking of all those things only gave me a headache, and I rubbed my temples to rid of the headache. But the question that frustrated me the most was... Why did she resent our relationship so much? In all honesty, I was pretty nice to her. I was never stingy and always gave her what she wanted. She was never short of things or money. I also never flirted or cheated with other she-wolves. It could be said that I was loyal to her. I didn't even force her to give birth to my pups, unlike other Alphas who forced their mates to bear their pups and give them heirs. Of course, I admitted that I didn't handle the matter properly when Sofia fell off the cliff and lost her baby, but I was angry with her. Wasn't it natural to be angry with someone as vicious as her? But then she was right. She was my Luna. I shouldn't have humiliated her and forced her to kneel and apologize. But was it enough for her to resent our relationship to that degree? The way her eyes were filled with disgust every time she saw me... I didn't think I deserved that cold attitude of hers. “I see that you are still stupid,” Rhett mocked me. “Shut up!” I didn't need him to add insults when I was frustrated. Instead of shutting up, he snorted. “You didn't know why she hated you? Think of what she said when she asked you if it’d make a difference if you knew she’s a powerful Alpha. Would you believe her? And would it make a difference?” I thought about Charlotte’s words and admitted that if she told me when she was with me, I might have told her not to be delusional. Would it make a difference? Of course, it would make a huge difference! I would have a powerful Luna and a connection with the second-strongest pack. But suddenly, I laughed out bitterly as realization dawned on me. Charlotte was right. No matter whether she was an orphan she-wolf or a powerful Alpha, I would just be using her for my personal gain. “See how stupid you are?” Rhett scowled at me. “Shut up!” I yelled at him again. “I just wanted to remind you of how stupid you are. Not like I wanted to talk to you. I was afraid your stupidity would rub off on me,” he snorted and retreated to the back of my mind, blocking me from retorting to him. “Hayden!” My dad suddenly stormed to my study and began yelling at me. “Why didn't you have the guts to fight against that weak she-wolf? You even let her throw your sister out of the banquet. Since when did the Alpha of the Red Claw Pack become a coward?!” “Dad... You shouldn't be too harsh on Charlotte. She never did anything wrong when she was here. Instead, we were the ones who bullied her because of her rogue status.” For the first time in my life, I defended Charlotte. “Did Milla tell you that Charlotte is actually the heiress of the Moon Crest Pack? She is, in fact, a powerful Alpha,” I added to make him less mad. But on the contrary, my dad’s expression turned darker, and he became more furious. “Then why did she conceal her identity? She must be a spy! She must have stolen some important information from our pack! Did you check if she took anything from our pack?” I thought about it, but I was sure she didn't take anything. “She must have released that recording purposely to affect the Red Claw Pack’s reputation and made other packs doubt us because of the scandal. Did you know how many packs tried to stop working with us? She put a dent in our business!” Dad was so furious he kept slandering Charlotte and wouldn't listen for any reason. “You better keep her under control!” Dad growled in a warning and left while banging the door behind him. Kept her under control? How the hell should I do that? She was not my mate anymore. And most importantly, she wasn't the same timid orphan girl she used to be. She even looked at me with disgust and didn't want to talk to me! I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to calm myself down. It was no use thinking of controlling Charlotte. It was an impossible task. Once I was calm, I began thinking about my dad’s words about Charlotte being a spy. Just like before, I didn't think she was that type of person. Heck, she even crossed out the compensation I wanted to give her on the divorce settlement. If she really wanted something, she wouldn't leave with nothing. And the Red Claw Pack was still as strong as ever. Nothing terrible had happened except for the scandal resulting from the recording being known by many werewolves. As for the recording, I thought she just wanted everyone to know the truth about what happened that day, although Sofia said that the recording was not completed. But it made me wonder again... Why did she leave with nothing? Was it because she loved me? But if she did truly love me, how could she change so fast? How could she let me go easily? Could her love for me disappear in an instant? Thinking about it, I subconsciously rubbed my hand over my heart. I didn't know why, but that thought pained me, and it felt so damn uncomfortable. As I was still feeling the pain in my heart, suddenly, I received a mind link from one of my friends, Max. Max had been spending time outside the continents since two years ago and had just returned, and we hadn't had time to catch up yet. “Hayden, I heard that you are now unmated? Is it true? And it wasn't just a normal rejection but breaking the matebond? And she was the one who wanted it?” he asked with a cheerful voice. Hearing his words and tone annoyed me even more, and the pain in my heart intensified. “And I heard she’s actually the mysterious, powerful female Alpha from the Moon Crest Pack? She is the heiress and will become the next Alpha?” he continued asking a barrage of questions without waiting for my reply. I had a feeling that he was mocking and laughing at me for letting go of such a powerful she-wolf. “What do you want?” I growled out. “Chill, dude,” he laughed. “Guess where I am right now.” I wasn't in the mood to play a guessing game with him. “Just tell me if you wanna tell me,” I growled. “I’m at the Dazzling Star Club! And guess who I saw?” he asked with excitement. The Dazzling Star Club was a popular upscale club with memberships. Those who could afford the memberships would only be the upper-class or wealthy werewolves. And it was the place that young unmated Alphas, Betas, and Gammas loved to frequent. “Who?” I snapped at him. This guessing game was getting old, and it really increased my annoyance. I had in mind just to close the mind link forcefully if he kept this up. “I saw your ex-Luna!” he laughed. Hearing the word ‘ex-Luna’ made me straighten in my seat. “Charlotte?” I asked to make sure. “Do you have any other ex-Luna? Of course, it’s her!” Max seemed gleeful that he finally caught my attention and took his words seriously. “Guess what she’s doing right now!” he seemed to be in the mood to torture me. “Tell me!” I growled out loud enough. If there were other people around me, they would no doubt be scared hearing my growl. “She’s been dancing with different guys, and damn, the guy she’s dancing with now is even hotter than the ones before.” His words somehow made my blood boil. The image of Charlotte dancing with hot men and them touching her made me want to tear those guys’ limbs off their bodies. “Wait for me there,” I said and closed the mind link. Not even bothering to change my clothes or mind linking my Beta, I quickly took my car key and drove to the Dazzling Star Club at high speed.
