CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
DAPHNE'S POV
I could see the turmoil in his eyes, but it didn’t calm my fears. “You’re hurting me,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I need to know he’s okay. What’s happening to him?”
Xander’s shoulders slumped slightly, the anger in his face replaced by a look of bitter sadness. “I’m doing this because I can’t stand to see you with someone else,” he said, his voice cracking. “I thought if I showed you how serious I am, you’d finally understand. But all it’s done is make me more desperate.”
His admission did little to soothe my anxiety. “If you cared about me,” I said, my voice trembling, “you’d tell me where he is. You’d let me know he’s safe. Don’t you understand? I can’t stand this uncertainty.”
Xander’s gaze was filled with a mix of anger and frustration. “You’re right,” he said, his voice low and strained.
