CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE THE MISSING BABY
Daphne's POV
I heard the hurried footsteps before I saw her. Maya came running towards us, her face pale and her breath coming in ragged gasps. My heart tightened with fear. “Maya, what’s wrong?” I asked, reaching out to steady her.
Maya was panting heavily, her eyes wide with panic. “Daphne, I… I can’t find him,” she stammered. “Your son… he’s disappeared. I just put him down for a few minutes, and when I came back, he was gone. I don’t know where he is!” Her voice broke, tears streaming down her face. “It’s my fault. I should have been more careful. I’m so sorry.”
The world seemed to tilt and spin around me. My legs gave way, and I fell to the ground, my body weak with shock.
Tears blurred my vision as I struggled to process her words. My baby… gone? How could this be happening? “No, no, no,” I murmured, clutching my chest as if I could keep my heart from shattering. “This can’t be real. This can’t be happening.”
