Daphne's POV
I took a deep breath and walked toward the General's quarters. The room, once my husband's, now seemed like a prison of its own. My heart pounded as I knocked on the door and stepped inside. The General, sprawled in a lavish chair, looked up with a mixture of surprise and anticipation.
“What do you want?” he asked, his voice dripping with a hint of arrogance.
I plastered a scowl on my face, determined to play my part. “I’ve changed my mind,” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. “I’ve decided I’ll stay with you.”
His eyes widened, a mix of triumph and skepticism dancing across his face. “You’ve finally seen the light, then?”
I took a deep breath and gave him a mockingly pained look. “I don’t know. I’m still not sure.” I let my gaze wander, meeting his eyes with a mixture of defiance and desperation. Inside, I was screaming at myself, thinking, *“You slimy, disgusting piece of—”*
