CHAPTER THIRTEEN - THE GHOSTS OF OUR PAST
Emma's fingers traced the tear-stained words of Marcus's letter for the hundredth time. The paper had become soft, almost fragile, from her constant handling. A gentle knock at the door startled her from her reverie.
"Emma, dear?" Marie called softly. "There's someone here to see you."
Wiping her eyes, Emma opened the door to find her mother standing beside a graceful blonde woman. Recognition dawned immediately.
"Mrs. Bennett?" Emma's voice cracked.
Diana Bennett's kind eyes crinkled with concern. "Hello, Emma. I hope you don't mind me dropping by unannounced."
Emma hesitated, then stepped back. "Please, come in."
The three women settled in Emma's living room, an awkward silence stretching between them. Diana finally broke it, her voice gentle but firm.
"I know my son has hurt you terribly, Emma. I'm not here to make excuses for him."
