CHAPTER EIGHTY THREE – A NEW TECHNIQUE
"Mrs. Thompson," Joan began, "I'd like to try something different today, if you're open to it."
Mrs. Thompson raised an eyebrow skeptically but didn't object.
Joan continued, "Instead of focusing on problems or trying to fix anything, I'd like you to tell me a story about a time in your life when you felt strong or capable."
Mrs. Thompson looked surprised, then thoughtful. After a long pause, she began to speak. "Well, there was this one time, years ago..."
As Mrs. Thompson shared her story, Joan gently guided her to explore the strengths and resources she had demonstrated in that moment. For the first time, Joan saw a glimmer of engagement in her client's eyes.
Over the next few sessions, Joan continued to use narrative therapy techniques, encouraging Mrs. Thompson to "re-author" her life story. Slowly but surely, Mrs. Thompson began to open up about her past traumas and current struggles.
