CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN – OPPOSITIONS AROUND
Later that day, as Joan and Zoe watched the news coverage of the incident, they were pleasantly surprised to find that most outlets had seen through the charade.
"Alleged protest revealed to be staged," one headline read. Another: "New mental health clinic faces unfounded opposition."
"Well," Zoe said with a grin, "that backfired spectacularly."
Joan nodded, feeling a mix of relief and lingering anxiety. "It did. But Vehara won't give up easily. We need to be prepared for whatever he throws at us next."
As if in answer to her words, Joan's phone rang. It was Alessandro.
"Cara," he said, his voice tense. "We have a situation. Can you come to the diner? Now?"
An hour later, Joan found herself once again in the back booth of Mama Rosa's. But this time, she was surprised to see not just Alessandro, but Don Felice as well.
"Joan, my dear," the old man greeted her warmly. "I hear you've had quite a day."
