In 12th grade, Classes 17 and 18 were considered the bottom of the barrel academically.
Not only did the students in these two classes struggle academically, but they were also difficult to manage. Fights and disturbances were a daily occurrence.
Many teachers were reluctant to teach students in these two classes.
There were two reasons for this. First, the students were indeed difficult to manage. Second, Ember Creek High School was more than just a prestigious institution. In recent years, it had transformed into an elite academy due to an influx of children from wealthy families.
With limited slots available, children from ordinary families often found themselves edged out by the offspring of wealthy families unless they excelled academically.
Though most students in honors classes came from average backgrounds, a few came from privileged families. However, to boost graduation rates and minimize disruptions, teachers generally preferred to focus on students from the honor class
