Chapter 6: I Can Help You Take Revenge

“Atishoo!” A sneeze came out, making Lainey back to her senses. Lainey awkwardly turned her face away, not daring to look into Winfred’s eyes anymore. His gaze seemed to contain so many things that she couldn’t and didn’t dare to read. Winfred took off the suit jacket he was wearing and put it on Lainey’s body, “Be careful not to catch a cold.” Lainey thanked Winfred. “It’s said that women like to eat something sweet to make themselves feel better when they’re in a bad mood. Have some!” Winfred handed both the bread and cake he had just bought into Lainey’s hands, stunning her. “All this stuff was bought for me?” Did Winfred buy the bread and cake because he knew she was in a bad mood? And was that why he had been laughed at so much? “Yes.” Winfred didn’t deny it, “I originally wanted to buy you a cake and then go out to coax you, but I didn’t expect to make you protect me instead.” The transformation was amazing. In other stories, heroes protected beauties. But he was protected by a beauty. It felt pretty good. Winfred’s words moved Lainey. She didn’t expect that there was a person caring about her at her saddest time. “Thanks.” Lainey had already thanked Winfred twice in two minutes, and he suddenly didn’t like her being so polite a little bit. “What happened?” Winfred took the initiative to ask. With Lainey’s character, it was unlikely that she would be that sad if she had not encountered something heartrending. Although she now looked fine, Winfred had not forgotten the mournful look of her just now licking her wounds like a helpless little beast in the rain. Lainey’s tears fell because of Winfred’s question. “They want me to die,” Lainey cried out of breath, “It’s all a lie. They just want me to die.” “Who wants you to die?” Winfred frowned more tightly. “Oooh, I don’t have a home anymore. I can’t go back anymore. They can’t wait for me and my mum to be dead.” Thinking of her mother lying alone in the hospital, with the possibility of her father giving up treatment at any time, Lainey was so sad. Lainey blamed herself for not being able to earn enough money to help her mum transfer to another hospital. Winfred frowned tightly. Although Lainey spoke in a disjointed and incoherent way, Winfred caught the most crucial words from it. Some people wanted her to die. She had a mum. The emotions Lainey had held back previously were finally vented at this moment. Yet she felt much better after crying. “I’m sorry I got your clothes dirty.” When Lainey cried in a mess just now, Winfred’s jacket on her was also stained with a lot of snot and tears. She was very guilty. Yet Winfred smiled and replied lightly, “It doesn’t matter. Just throw it away.” “I can wash it for you!” Lainey said in a hurry. The jacket was still in good condition, and it would be too wasteful to abandon it. Winfred didn’t care about it. Instead, he asked Lainey, “Tell me, who wants you to die? I can help you take revenge.” Lainey had just protected him, and now it was his turn to protect her in return. Lainey, however, faintly shook her head, “Forget it. It’s over.” No matter how bad the person who expected her to die was, he was her father. Although she knew that Rooney had long been together with Estelle to give birth to Jayda, this illegitimate daughter, she didn’t want to make too much of a mess with Rooney because of their father-daughter bond. Seeing that Lainey didn’t want to say, Winfred couldn’t force her anymore. Instead, he looked up at the rear view mirror meaningfully. Vernon, who was driving, instantly understood what Mr. Sloan meant, and nodded silently. Lainey followed Winfred back to the Heyday Mansion. Then Lainey got sick that night. “Miss Warren’s fever is caused by the cold after getting soaked in the rain. Taking this antipyretic will reduce the fever.” Family doctor, Hector Baldwin, gave his conclusion after examining Lainey’s condition and quickly took out a box of ibuprofen from the medicine box and handed it over to Winfred. “I’ll go and make ginger soup for Miss Warren. She will definitely get better after drinking the soup and sweating.” The servant, Clare, said and hurriedly went downstairs to the kitchen. Lying in Winfred’s big bed, Lainey curled up into a ball and kept shivering. Because of the high fever, she began to talk nonsense and keep calling mum, look extremely poor. Winfred came over to sit on the edge of the bed and held Lainey, picked up the water prepared on the bedside table and fed her the medicine. Then he carefully and considerately wiped her forehead with the wet towel beside. He did all these seriously. “Where did you find such a young girl? I don’t think I’ve seen you take care of any woman like this before.” Hector asked with a teasing smile. “She’s my wife.” Winfred replied tonelessly, which almost scared Hector. “What the fuck? Your wife?” “To be exact, she’s the wife the old fox found for me.” Looking at Lainey’s tightly closed eyes and red face, Winfred smiled slightly in a good mood. “Of all the women the old fox has sent over, she’s the only one who hasn’t been scared off by me, and she’s the only one who protected me.” “She protected you?” Hector looked like he heard some kind of joke, “Did I hear it wrong?” Winfred ignored Hector and took care of Lainey by himself. At this time, Vernon hurried in to report. “Winfred, I’ve found it!” “Say it!” “According to my investigation, Mrs. Sloan’s mother has been locked up in a mental hospital due to mental disorder. In addition, her father, Rooney Warren, has long since hooked up with a woman named Estelle Fletcher, and the two have a daughter named Jayda Fletcher, who is even older than Mrs. Sloan.” Vernon reported the details he had found out one by one. “Initially, Estelle was hired by Mrs. Warren and came to work in the Warren family as the housekeeper. Two years after Estelle entered the Warren family, Mrs. Warren was sent to a psychiatric sanatorium by Rooney because of mental disorder. She hasn’t come out for so many years.” “You mean, you suspect that Mrs. Warren’s mental illness is not simple, right?” “At least from the information I’ve got so far, it shouldn’t be that simple.” As Vernon said, he handed the document in his hand to Winfred. Winfred read it through casually, “Find out which mental hospital Mrs. Warren is in. Settle her down properly.” Vernon looked deeply at Lainey, who was asleep in Mr. Sloan’s arms, and quickly left. “Winfred, I’ve never seen you so attached to any woman.” Hector chuckled, “She doesn’t look more than twenty. Aren’t you afraid of the generation gap between you?” Winfred glanced at Hector and asked in reply, “What’s the generation gap?” From the time he saw Lainey defending him, he had already ignored the so-called generation gap. Hector didn’t know what to say for a moment. Fine! He’d better shut up. It seemed that Winfred was determined to take this little girl as his wife. Hector was also curious how Winfred would get along with Miss Warren.
