Elodie’s tyres screeched to a halt in the driveway.
The living room was a symphony of chaos.
Shattered mugs littered the marble floor, cushions wrestled on the sofa like disgruntled puppies, and a vase lay in pieces.
Amid this domestic disaster, Vivienne, her mascara running like black tears, clutched her arm dramatically.
‘She attacked me first!’ She pointed an accusing finger at the housekeeper sitting on the sofa.
Debra, her eyes red-rimmed, held up a hand. ‘Miss Fontaine, it wasn’t like that—’
Vivienne cut her off with a snarl. ‘Oh, spare me the theatrics! You’re the one who tried to break into the study, you lying hag!’
Elodie’s stomach clenched.
The study was off-limits to anyone but her.
She moved closer, inspecting Debra’s injuries.
A thin red scratch marred her cheek, and the backs of her hands bore angry red welts.
‘Debra, take the rest of the day off,’ Elodie said, her voice firm. ‘You are going to the doctor, and I’ll take care of the bills.’
