Finally, the man’s voice slithered back into her ear, laced with a chilling amusement. ‘Alright, Miss Patton, consider it a one-week reprieve. But only because two other little delinquents in this city need my “personal attention,” so don’t push your luck. If your account isn’t overflowing with cash by next Friday, I’m booking a first-class ticket to Danning. And trust me, sweetheart, running won’t do you a lick of good. I have eyes everywhere.’
The line went dead, leaving Selene gasping for air, the phone a dead weight in her hand.
Her legs trembled like jelly, refusing to cooperate as she tried to stand.
An airport security guard, noticing her pale, sweat-slicked face, approached cautiously. ‘Miss, everything alright?’
Selene swallowed, the taste of fear like bile in her throat. ‘F-fine,’ she stammered, forcing an unconvincing smile.
The guard, thankfully, didn’t pry further, and Selene watched him walk away.
Her eyes landed on his dark blue uniform.
