‘You are not nearly as smart as you think you are,’ Elodie sneered. ‘Now, talk. Who’s the puppet master in this twisted little show?’

She sat with her back hunched and drew her knees under her chin, the picture of insolence.
A scoff escaped Elodie’s lips. ‘You, your father, and Uncle Cyrus – you’re cut from the same cloth. Greedy, with more ambition than brain. You all wanted me gone, but the best you could do was spread rumours and hire muscles dumber than a box of rocks. But none of you have the scheming gene in your DNA, not for something as intricate as kidnapping.’
Vivienne muttered, barely audible, ‘You never should’ve come back to Los Montical. Should’ve stayed dead...’
‘Who sent you after me?’ An idea struck Elodie. ‘Is it the same person who sent the letters to your father four years ago?’
