I instinctively tried to hide the containers behind me. Perhaps my childish gesture amused the two men, as they laughed and stepped into the elevator. After the elevator doors closed, I walked toward Kara's room. After just a few steps, I sensed something was off. I turned back to look at the already closed elevator doors, then quickly dashed to Kara's room. "Kara," I called out as I pushed the door open. Kara looked at me. Seeing me breathless, she asked, "Maddie, what's wrong?" I was okay, other than the fact that something might have happened to her. Now that I saw she was fine, I sighed in relief and stepped inside. As I prepared to place the food on the bedside table, I noticed a bundle of cash. It hit me then. This was hush money. Those two men had come to Kara so she stayed quiet about the abuse. "Maddie, can you help me put this money away?" Kara mentioned calmly. But I didn't move. I stared at the money. "Why did you accept it?" Kara gazed vacantly at the ceiling.
