‘What favour?’
Kieran looked straight at me. ‘My grandfather left a will. I will be cut out of the inheritance if I’m not married by the end of this year.’
I stared at him.
Was he serious?
‘We’ve known each other for quite a while now. We are friends, right?’
I nodded.
‘So, will you do me this favour?’
‘I still don’t know what it is you want me to do.’
‘Marry me.’
My mouth hung open. ‘Are you joking?’
‘I’m not.’ He held my hand. ‘I’m dead serious.’
I had no idea what to say.
‘It’s just for show, of course. To fool the probate lawyers, I’ll need to produce a marriage certificate, notarised.’
‘Marriage.’ I muttered to myself.
When I woke up at the hospital, he proposed to me.
I turned him down, though at the time, he looked impossibly earnest.
Now he was bringing up the subject again.
But his tone was nonchalant.
When he said he needed a favour from me, I thought maybe it was something to do with the new apartment.
Something trivial, like picking out a new colour for the carpet.
