At some point, Fitz came, lugging a medical kit.
He took my temperature, hooked me up to an IV drip, then left with Kieran.
I heard voices, but couldn’t catch what they were saying.
Whatever drug Fitz gave me put me under.
When I woke, it was still dark outside.
I’d slept for a whole day.
Some of the cobwebs had cleared from my head.
My joints no longer ached like unoiled hinges.
I sat up in bed, found the pillow damp with sweat.
My skin was clammy, hot to the touch.
I rolled out of bed, almost face-planted on the floor.
‘Miss Finnegan, you shouldn’t get up!’
The bedroom door was pushed open.
A pair of pink fluffy slippers came into view.
Strong arms circled my waist, helped me up, deposited me back in bed.
A callused hand was laid over my forehead.
‘Luckily, you didn’t rip out the IV needle. Your temperature hasn’t gone down yet. Doctor Meyers prescribed bed rest and plenty of fluids.’
I blinked at the woman.
Late forties, plump, a homely face, warm eyes.
