CHAPTER 102 WINTER BLUES
In that year, the first weeks of January came like a heavy blanket of cold and unrelenting weather. The warmth of December was gone and the quiet settled in the house like a thick mist that does not dissipate when the sun rises. Beyond, the sky was a uniform shade of gray and the snow that had been enchanting the day before appeared to be nothing but the additional weight put on the earth’s surface.
Jenna was standing in front of the window looking at the bare trees on the street in front of their house. Hugging herself, she pulled the sleeves of the cardigan closer around her in a bid to counter the coldness that was not only external but internal as well. The New Year’s Day brunch had been such fun—a ray of sunshine and happiness in their lives—now all the darkness of winter depressed her. The novelty of starting something new was over and what they are left with is a cold winter, long days without a sun and early evenings.
