After administering the injection, Julian left hurriedly, visibly rattled under Sophia's intense glare.
By 7:00 pm, my fever finally broke.
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the stark white hospital ceiling and Sophia asleep in a chair beside me. Edison was nowhere to be found.
I stared at her for a moment, my mind hazy and disoriented.
"Am I dead?" I murmured. "Why else would I dream of you sitting here, watching over me?"
Sophia's eyes snapped open, her sharp gaze cutting through me. "Joshua, is living really so unbearable for you?"
"What's so great about being alive?" I shot back indifferently. Then, with a bitter laugh, I added, "For you, life is fantastic, isn't it? Endless money, endless men—sounds like a dream."
"Watch what you're saying, Joshua!" she snapped, her face darkening.
She'd expected me to wake up weak and docile. Instead, here I was, sparring with her already. Clearly, my health wasn't as dire as she'd thought.
