"Oh," I said, thinking out loud. "Gold is a pretty uncommon last name."
Lucas grunted a response and went back to resting with his eyes shut.
He was quieter today, more than usual, like he had something on his mind.
I was not the type to dig for answers or to bug him about why he was feeling down. Seeing that he did not want to talk, I kept to myself and stayed quiet.
By the time I got back to Bamboo House, it was already dark. Despite Mandala's warm weather, the evenings in the dead of winter could still be chilly. Drained from the day's walk, I didn't have the energy for much else. After indulging in some sweets, I headed to my room for the night.
Life had settled into a calm routine. To anyone looking in, I might have seemed like a canary Lucas kept in a cage, just waiting for the egg that had not yet come. I was used to it by now. Sometimes, I even wondered if I was not careful, would I end up spending my whole life with Lucas?
