"Ms. Scott!" The shout came from far off.
Worried that Idris might get caught, I nudged him to hurry up, then dashed off toward the voice. It was Lucas's bodyguard.
He had brought some cat food and a bowl of water. Upon seeing me coming, he looked confused. "Ms. Scott, did the cat... take off?"
I shook my head, pointing to where the scaredy-cat had been hiding. "Just leave the food here. It's probably too freaked out to come out with us here. It'll eat when we're gone."
He nodded, set down the food and water, and I peeked around the corner. There was no sign of Idris. He had made his escape.
I breathed a sigh of relief and strolled back to Bamboo House.
Later, when Lucas came back, I was swinging in the yard, my mind a million miles away. Seeing Idris again was like a burst of happiness and a sigh of relief all at once. He was alive, and that was a miracle.
