Chapter 11
After a pause, Jasper ordered, "Stop the car."
The car rolled to a stop before the bus stop, but Evelyn still did not register it. She had counted more cars that had sped past her than she cared to remember, for none of them belonged to her. She couldn't even afford a two-dollar bus fare right now.
The car door opened, and a man with expensive leather bespoke shoes stepped out. He was holding up a black umbrella as she walked up to Evelyn.
His tall and straight figure cast a shadow over her miserable frame. Only then did she sense his presence and only looked up. When she saw Jasper, she thought she must have gone mad with the cold.
"What are you doing out here like this?" Jasper demanded, lowering his gaze as he took in her soaked loungewear. She was still shivering, perhaps from the cold.
Evelyn pursed her lips and said nothing.
Jasper's patience was running thin. He was tired from working late, and rainwater had splattered onto his suit pants. He hated rain.
