CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINE – HURT ON SIGHT
The words hit Logan like a physical blow. He stumbled back, collapsing into a nearby chair. "This can't be happening," he whispered.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vernetti. I need to get back to the OR. A nurse will update you as soon as we have more information."
As Dr. Patel hurried away, Logan buried his face in his hands. The waiting room around him buzzed with quiet conversation and the beeping of machines, but he felt completely alone.
"Logan!"
He looked up to see Nia rushing towards him, her face pale with worry.
"Nia," Logan stood, his voice cracking. "Have you heard anything about Kayla?"
Nia nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. "She's okay. She's in the pediatric ward. Just some minor bruising from the car seat straps. They're keeping her for observation, but she'll be fine."
Relief washed over Logan, quickly followed by a new wave of fear for Deonna. "Thank God," he breathed. "Deonna... she's in surgery. It's bad, Nia. Really bad."
