Shelmaine had stayed up late last night, so she woke up later than usual this morning. After a quick shower and getting dressed, she stepped out of her room.
The blanket on the couch was neatly folded, and the smell of oatmeal drifted from the kitchen. Curious, she walked over and saw Samuel busy at the stove.
The small kitchen seemed even smaller as Samuel stood there, dressed in a crisp white shirt and black slacks, looking as polished and handsome as ever. Except now, the kitchen held a trace of everyday warmth.
Shelmaine frowned, asking, "Have you recovered from the fever?"
"Yes."
Samuel turned off the stove, his tone casual, as if nothing was out of the ordinary. "You're up. Did I wake you?"
"No," she replied, her voice flat. "Why haven't you left yet?"
"I couldn't figure out how to unlock your door."
It was an obvious lie.
She didn't bother arguing. She simply walked to the door, opened it, and motioned for him to leave. "You can go now."
