"I'm sorry I scared you," Nia said sincerely. "Thanks for being here."
"Of course," Kathy replied. "That's what friends are for. I'll visit every day until you're out of here."
Nia's eyes widened. "Every day? Kathy, you don't have to do that. What about work?"
Kathy waved her hand dismissively. "Don't worry about that. I've already talked to HR and arranged to work flexible hours. The team sends their best wishes, by the way. I told them you had an accident but didn't give details."
"Thanks," Nia said gratefully. "I appreciate you handling all that."
"It's the least I could do," Kathy said. "Now, fill me in on everything. What exactly have you been investigating?"
Nia hesitated, weighing how much to reveal. "It's... complicated. And potentially dangerous. I'm not sure I should drag you into it."
Kathy fixed her with a stern look. "Nia Moreno, I'm already involved. My best friend is in the hospital with a gunshot wound. Spill it."
