I handed the room card to Darren and thanked him.
He hesitated as if he wanted to say something more, but when our eyes met—mine calm yet distant—he chose to remain silent.
I lay on the bed, staring blankly at the pure white ceiling. I was lost in thought.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was the familiar sound of a video call notification. To my surprise, it was Donn.
I swiped the answer button, and Donn's handsome face appeared on my screen. "Cassie, I heard you were injured in Ridgevale?"
I hadn't even reported this to Tiffany yet, so how did Donn find out so quickly?
I nodded. "Just a minor injury."
His deep voice came through the phone, full of concern. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let you handle this project."
I shook my head. "If anyone's to blame, it's just my bad luck."
"I'll file this as a workplace injury. Submit a report, and I'll approve your leave."
Donn's tone returned to its usual, gentle manner. He looked like the refined gentleman I once knew, no longer carrying
