Chapter 17
His request shocked Rita.
His voice was weak, and she could see how fragile his health had become. "I know this is selfish of me and not fair to you," he said. "But I feel guilty that I couldn't protect you from the Wallis family when I was alive. I want to make it up to you before I go."
"In the future, when I meet your grandmother in heaven, I don't know how to tell her..."
Rita held the old man's hand and said in a trembling voice, "Grandpa..."
She didn't know what to say.
Her grandmother had fallen on stairs when she was 18, and her parents died in a car accident on the way to the hospital. Not long after, her grandmother passed away, and entrusted her to Old Master Dark.
When she was 20 years old, Old Master Dark suddenly fell seriously ill. In the hospital, the old man once felt that he couldn't hold it anymore and he was so worried about her future, so he let his grandson Nelson Wallis marry her.
Although Nelson did not treat her well, he was filial in front of his grandfather. So he took her to hold a wedding immediately in order to make the old man feel at ease.
It was a loveless and unhappy marriage, but Rita had always felt grateful to Old Master Dark for his love and support over the years. Now, he was asking her to stay with Nelson, to postpone the divorce until after his death. It was a painful request, but Rita couldn't refuse her beloved grandfather.
"I promise not to divorce now," she said, her voice trembling. "I'll do it for you, Grandpa. Don't scare me like that in the future. I know you're doing this for my own good."
Although Nelson did not love her, her status as the young mistress of the Wallis family could protect her.
That's all grandpa had ever wanted for her.
Over the years, she had lost a lot of things. Her grandmother, her parents, and her child. She didn't want her grandpa to leave with regret and guilt. If she could make him happy when he was alive, she would try her best to do it.
"Thank you, my dear," the old man caressed her hair lovingly.
Rita said, "Grandpa, I can postpone the divorce, but I want to go back to my own Biltmore Estate. I'll come to visit you often, okay?"
The old man knew that she was uncomfortable living here, so he didn't force her. "Okay."
......
Coming out of the old man's room, Rita saw that Emma was sitting in the front hall, and her face was as serious as usual.
Emma seemed to have always been like this. She rarely smiled, and even if she did, she smiled in an indifferent way.
Hearing the footsteps, Emma turned her head and saw Rita, with her bag. She suddenly stood up and asked, "Where are you going?"
Rita said, "I'm heading to the Yueluan Manor."
Emma immediately frowned slightly.
Rita didn't have anything to say and just walked past her. At this time, Emma suddenly said, "Do you still want a divorce?"
Rita shook her head. "I promised Grandpa that I wouldn't do it for the time being."
Emma exhaled a long sigh, her eyes fixated on Rita. "You are the Young Madam of the Wallis family now, Rita. You have to carry yourself with confidence and not let anyone underestimate you or make you feel inferior."
Rita looked at her in confusion.
Was this Emma's way of showing concern for her?
Concern from Emma?
It seemed unbelievable.
"I think she's just afraid that if I don't retaliate in time, I'll appear spineless as the young mistress of the Wallis family," Rita thought to herself.
"Don't worry, Mrs. Wallis. I'm no longer what I used to be. No one can bully me," said Rita.
Hearing her call her Mrs. Wallis, Emma couldn't help frowning. But in the end, she didn't say anything more and only said, "You can go."
After that, she turned around and went upstairs.
Looking at Emma's back, Rita's lips curled into a disdainful sneer.
She did not care about the reputation of the Wallis family, nor did she care about the position of the Madam of the Wallis family.
