CHAPTER 61: CAPTURED BY THE ENEMY
CAMERON’S POV
It was a calm morning. The table Emilia and I were sitting at was bathed in a warm, golden glow from a gentle sunbeam that came in through the kitchen window. I was genuinely happy for the first time in a long time, and the aroma of coffee and pancakes permeated the air. It was one of those infrequent occasions when everything appeared to be in order. Don't worry. Avoid any distractions. Me and her alone.
We were giggling at something, most likely something dumb I had said or perhaps one of her jokes that I didn't really get but thought was funny nevertheless. Everything was always made better by her chuckle. It was similar to the music I was unaware I needed. The kind that, even for a brief instant, eased the weight of the world.
"Are you ever going to teach me how to make pancakes like this?" I asked, enjoying the taste of home as I took a piece out of the fluffy stack she had prepared.
