Chapter 7
The next day, the housekeeper came over with Lucas' sister, Sophia Grant. She had just turned 17 years old, and was tall and slender.
The first thing she did once she stepped inside was toss her bag on the couch before she looked up at Lucas, asking, "Where's Evelyn?"
Lucas looked at her after tying his tie, querying, "Is that how you should be addressing her?"
Pursing her lips, Sophia retorted, "Lucas, I don't like her, so why should I be respectful toward her?"
She remembered how her mom had said that Evelyn had married someone way out of her league. Hence, it was only right that she devoted herself entirely to the Grant family.
Her mother had used a specific word, but what was that word again? Oh, an elite housekeeper.
"Tell me, what are you up to this time?" Lucas understood his sister well. His tone was also cold and overbearing as he spoke to her.
Her eyes shone as she asked, "Are you swamped today?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Mom's at a fashion show and Dad is abroad. Grandma's also not feeling very well. No one is free to attend my parent-teacher meeting. That's why I thought of asking Evelyn to come instead.
"She's basically leeching off you, so she'll have a lot of free time on her hands," Sophia answered as she swung her legs.
Lucas paused momentarily and mentioned, "You can discuss it with her yourself."
Sophia scoffed and remarked confidently, "She's been extra nice to me because she wants to please you. She's like those scheming and calculative women people talk about online. I just need to notify her about it."
She had been obsessed with watching Tiffany's public speeches on aerospace engineering while she was staying abroad. Hence, her grades had dropped.
The teacher was bound to speak to Sophia's parents during the parent-teacher meeting, so Sophia did not want her mom or Lucas to attend. Since Evelyn was unimportant, it did not matter whether the teacher scolded her or not.
Desperate to win Sophia's favor, Evelyn definitely wouldn't reveal the truth to Lucas or the siblings' mother.
Hearing Sophia's words, Lucas gave it some thought before he took his coat and headed out. "Alright. I'll approve her leave."
…
Evelyn had felt a headache when she woke up, seemingly having caught a slight fever. Her body had become slightly unpredictable due to her immune system no longer functioning like a normal human being.
She had already applied to take a sick leave yesterday since she had planned to visit the hospital today. At the same time, she also wanted to confirm her conservative treatment plan with her oncologist too.
She had just arrived at the hospital's lobby, and her legs had already gone weak. She had barely taken another step when she began to fall forward.
"Evie!" She heard a woman call out to her moments before she fainted.
…
When she came to, she saw her best friend, Justine Scott, sitting beside the hospital bed.
Seeing that Evelyn was awake, Justine felt slightly distressed as she scolded, "How much is that bastard working you to death? The doctor said that you have a fever due to exhaustion."
Evelyn immediately felt tense, worried that Justine would learn about her illness.
"What's wrong? Has the fever made you dumb?" Justine shouted out in shock. "Doctor, she's…"
Feeling that her headache was about to come, Evelyn quickly stopped Justine. "It's alright. I'm fine."
Luckily, Justine was still oblivious to her sickness. Otherwise, with Justine's personality, the news about Evelyn suffering from cancer would have spread throughout Clementon.
Then, her grandmother, Deborah Johnson, and her uncle, Leonard Reed would have found out about it sooner or later.
"Why are you at the hospital?" Evelyn asked.
Justine shrugged, explaining, "My idiotic brother seemed to have had a meltdown and drank until he had alcohol poisoning. I'm here to see if he's still alive. You look awful, though. Is it because of Lucas, that bastard, and his mistress?"
She had also seen the livestream. Only a handful of people knew that he was married, yet he was going around and flaunting his relationship with his mistress. It was disgusting!
They were all scumbags!
Evelyn felt slightly dazed, and no emotions stirred up from within her. "We're about to get a divorce."
Once the cooling-off period had ended, she would be able to end her disastrous marriage.
Justine froze and quickly misunderstood the situation. She narrowed her eyes and asked, "Does he plan on making things official with that bitch?"
Back then, Evelyn had given up on her dreams and career when she married Lucas. She had even rejected a rare opportunity from Graham Hill to join the Aerospace Research Institute.
Instead, she focused on being a housewife as she took care of Lucas' needs, loving that bastard wholeheartedly.
In everyone's eyes, they believed that Evelyn would never agree to a divorce unless Lucas had insisted on one.
Evelyn shook her head, clarifying, "I'm the one who asked for it."
Justine was shocked for two minutes before clapping. "That's more like it! A woman as capable as you should focus on her career, instead of wasting away in the name of love.
"Why don't you leave Bluezen and join the Flying Seal Group? You can be the company's technical shareholder."
The Flying Seal Group was a tech company that focused mainly on making state-of-the-art drones, and Justine was one of the company's biggest shareholders.
Although she did not understand a thing about drones and had been a terrible student her whole life, Justine had one of the most important things a company needed—money. She also did not shy away from spending tons of it on her company.
A flicker of excitement immediately flashed across Evelyn's pale face when she heard Justine bringing up the Flying Seal Group.
