Chapter 6
Evelyn met Blake's gaze.
He was looking at her with an indifferent smile, behaving like an outsider trying to see her flustered.
Evelyn clenched her hands together tightly as the last strand of hope in her heart snapped. She met his gaze and did as he asked. "Alright. Nice to meet you, Jessica."
Jessica's smile deepened as she wrapped her arms around Blake's waist, acting all shy and flustered.
He paused momentarily before glancing at Evelyn. Then, he looked down at Jessica and pulled her back into the living room.
"Why are you acting so noble? Blake will not fall for a married woman!" Selina mocked as she walked toward Evelyn.
Then, she continued, "As for that woman whom Mr. Grant had thrown a birthday celebration for? She's Ms. Moore, a graduate student with a PhD in aerospace engineering.
"She's currently highly sought after by the corporate world. How can a housewife like you who only knows how to cook and warm a bed compete with someone like her?
"Are you afraid that you'll be kicked out soon? Is that why you've suddenly returned to the Harrison family?"
Evelyn's disastrous marriage was a joke in everyone's eyes. As she set the gift bag she brought down, she felt her chest tightening.
Then, she reacted, "Don't worry. No matter how good or bad my life is in the future, it'll have nothing to do with the Harrisons. After all, Reed is my last name."
With that, she turned around and left without hesitation.
"Did she leave?" Derek came out from another room and just so happened to see Evelyn leaving. His expression darkened.
Selina came to her senses and murmured, "Dad, look at how rude she is! She doesn't respect you or the Harrison family. The way I see it, it's only a matter of time until Mr. Grant divorces her."
Throughout the three years that Lucas and Evelyn were married, Derek knew that Evelyn had failed to win Lucas' heart over.
Aside from the initial benefits he had reaped from the beginning of their marriage, the Harrisons had gained nothing from their connection to the Grant family.
No matter how many business projects they tried to gain the Grant Group's support, Lucas had never given them the advantage. In fact, he had never seen Derek as his father-in-law.
It was all Evelyn's fault. She was a useless piece of shit who wasn't even able to win her husband's heart.
Derek's expression darkened as he glanced at Selina, mentioning, "You're not young anymore either. Since Evelyn is useless, I'll try and create some opportunities for you to meet Lucas."
Selina immediately understood what he meant.
Her expression tensed as she subconsciously turned to look at Blake, only to see him smirking as he fed Jessica some grapes with her mouth.
She bit her lips as grievance flashed across her eyes.
…
Evelyn rented a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment, ready for her to move in at any time she wanted.
She had also signed a one-year contract since the hospital she visited frequently was less than two miles away. That way, it would be much more convenient for her to travel over whenever needed.
After leaving the Harrison residence, she felt a splitting headache. However, the pain did not cause her to forget to block Lucas on WhatsApp.
She had not blocked his number in case he needed to contact her to arrange for a time to finalize their divorce at the courthouse.
What she needed to do now was to endure the cooling-off period before the divorce was finalized.
Putting her phone down, she took a bath before lying down on her bed and falling asleep.
…
At the same time, Lucas had just returned to the villa he shared with Evelyn, only to realize that Evelyn had not kept the lights on for him.
In the past, no matter how late he came back, she would always keep a lamp on for him. She would also always come up to him, take his coat, and prepare a fresh set of clothes.
He rarely came home and would only come home on specific days every month to fulfill his "duty".
Out of habit, he reached out to hand over his coat, only for his coat to drop to the ground. He then looked around the place and frowned slightly.
Was Evelyn throwing a tantrum?
He walked up the stairs and pushed open the master bedroom door. He had originally assumed that she had decided not to wait for him and rest early as a way to "protest" against him.
However, the bed was empty, and the entire villa was dark and silent.
Evelyn had not returned home.
During the afternoon, Michael also reported to him about Evelyn's attitude toward Tiffany's case. He had also informed that Evelyn had threatened to take them to court.
And now…
Lucas loosened his tie and smirked. Was she trying to run away from home?
However, he did not care as Evelyn did need some time to cool off and think.
