“I will wait,” Baron said, but not before his face shifted through surprise, uncertainty, and then resignation.
“I’m joking,” I said, a sheepish smile taking over my face until my eyes nearly squinted shut as I beamed at him. “If I’m going to pack, it will take me at least three hours, and three hours off your journey is long enough. I’m not that unreasonable.”
He chuckled, stepping closer and taking my face in his hands. “Stay safe,” he said. “If anything happens, Bane will protect you with his life. And if he loses his life—” Baron turned toward Bane, who didn’t seem particularly interested in our conversation, his attention focused on the building behind us. “I don’t subscribe to that,” I said, jokingly tapping his arm. “Go,” I said, nodding him towards the car and sidestepping him to evade his soft grip on me—a grip I knew was reserved for when I was carrying a child, like now.
