“Three weeks and two days,” I whispered to myself. I had been in the desert for that long. The hostile environment had grown on me. I walked away from the window, tired of the vast, arid landscape but somehow refreshed by it. The humid and oppressive environment of the capital city had been replaced by this dry heat, which, strangely enough, had done wonders for my hair. The curls stayed in place instead of being smothered by the humidity. I knew you liked it too.
I turned to my little one, watching him fuss around in his crib. Lucian—his father had decided to name him. I stepped closer and leaned over the wooden side, causing it to rock towards me and his eyes to flutter open. They were a strange color. I thought to myself. They were neither a pure blue nor gray; sometimes, the blue got so dark I thought it was obsidian, while the gray sometimes looked green, causing a bit of confusion.
“What are you?” I found myself asking as I reached out my hand and tapped him on his nose
