"Is there a reason why she’s coming with us?" Baron asked Gabriel, though he was mostly looking at Lyra, who was sitting in the car with them.
"Because I feel like it’s somehow my fault that she got away. If I had been with her, maybe I could have done something," Lyra said, her eyes downcast.
"What could you have done? If Avario couldn’t protect her, do you think you would have?" Baron asked without looking at her anymore.
"I’m sorry," she said again.
"It’s not your fault, Lyra," Baron said. "Perhaps I should have insisted she came with me. Or maybe I shouldn’t have bothered with this stupid war in the first place. Or maybe I shouldn’t have gone." Baron felt the deeper regret; he had driven her away, he said to himself.
“Enough. You’re not leaving,” Baron said, his eyes flashing with anger. He swallowed his emotions and said, “She was my mother’s sister. Crusader. You know exactly what she means to me.”
