“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick, Gertrude?” I queried, standing before her bed while Desiree sat beside her.
Gertrude heaved a deep sigh accompanied by a sad smile. The expression painting her countenance was more than enough for me to know.
“I didn’t want to burden you, Alpha, a lot has been going on in the Pack, preparations for Desiree’s coronation are in full force, I didn’t want to be the person that puts a halt to it. I thought I could hold it in until Desiree becomes Luna.”
“Do you realize how important you are to me? You’re more than just the housekeeper of the manor, Gertrude. You’re my second mother and it pains me that you don’t realize how priceless you are in our lives.”
“I’m sorry, Alpha,” she replied.
“Sorry doesn’t cut it! You could have died last night if it wasn’t for Desiree. Whatever you were going through, you could have told me. You’re not a burden, Gertrude, and I will never consider you as one.”
