I didn’t hear the wail of an ambulance siren, but men in white lab coats sprinted up the steps past me.
Mia was helped onto a stretcher, then loaded into the back of the ambulance with flashing lights.
Kingsley’s face, hands and shirt were stained with blood.
He seemed surprised to find me still standing on the steps.
His lips moved, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying.
Frowning, he picked me up in his arms and ran down the steps.
I was like a marionette, unable to move, unable to speak, unable to feel my own body.
Kingsley pushed me into the back of the ambulance and started talking to one of the paramedics.
Someone came over to check on me.
He said something.
I didn’t respond, since I couldn’t hear him.
He waved his hand in front of my face.
I didn’t blink.
Then he shone a flashlight into my eyes.
The ambulance stopped almost as soon as it started.
The paramedics hurried out with the stretcher.
