Farewell
‘After I dropped you off at Conor’s office,’ Kieran said, ‘I went back to the basement with tools. I got the door open. It revealed a tunnel, a long, long passage. The other end was blocked by another door, which could only be opened from the other side.’
‘That was when you called me,’ I said.
‘Right. I figured either you or Conor could get the drawing plans from City Hall. A tunnel of that length had to be a major project, done by a crew with proper tools. It was not something you can dig by hand, you know. So, permits had to be obtained, plans had to be filed with City Hall.’
‘Were you expecting we’d find Brennan at the end of the tunnel?’ I asked.
‘No, not really. I was thinking, the tunnel had to lead somewhere. Maybe another basement, but it could give us some clues. I didn’t expect it would lead to the Clubhouse, or that Brennan would be arrogant enough to stay there.’
‘You shouldn’t have gone into the tunnel by yourself. What if Brennan was waiting for you at the other end? What
