"Please don't say that, Grandpa. You're going to get better," I said.
Grandpa shook his head, looking calm as he said, "I know my own body… I've lived a long life, and I don't have many regrets. The only thing I can't stop worrying about is you. I know Silas hurt you, even though you never said a word.
"That's why I never could stand Whitney. You and Silas might not have been the best match, but I've always thought of you like my own granddaughter, and I really hope you find someone who's right for you."
"Grandpa—"
"Let me finish."
He pulled a bank card out of his pocket, gave it to me, and said softly, "Take this as my gift for your future wedding. I don't think I'll be around to see it."
Tears sprang to my eyes as I shook my head. "Grandpa, I can't take this."
"Please, just take it. It's just a little something from me. I'll be mad if you don't."
