Chapter 10
"Mom!" Luna ran over to tug on Lorraine's hand. "Can you play with me?"
This was the perfect opportunity for Lorraine to get away from this awkward conversation. Smiling, she said, "Sure!"
She got up and left with Luna. Logan remained where he was as he watched her play with the children. He could tell Lorraine genuinely adored the twins and had quickly gotten used to her new role as a mother. No wonder the kids had accepted her as their mother immediately after meeting her.
People always said children had the most untainted souls. They were young, but that didn't mean they were dumb. They could tell who was genuinely nice to them.
The daughters of affluent families who had expressed their interest in Logan had only pretended to like the children. As a result, the children didn't like any of those women.
Finnegan and Luna were sweaty after running around. Lorraine didn't want them to tire themselves out, so she said, "I think that's enough playing for today, sweethearts. Let's sit down for a break before heading back."
The children were tired and allowed her to pull them back to Logan. He immediately pulled some tissues from his pocket and started wiping their sweat. Lorraine wanted to do this but couldn't because she didn't have any tissues.
As she watched him wipe their foreheads, she could tell he was used to caring for them. Despite being unmarried, he did a great job as a father. It was easy to see how patient and loving he was.
Once again, Lorraine thanked her lucky stars that she had broken her glasses and accidentally married him. The Logan she was supposed to meet couldn't compare to the Logan she was married to now. Perhaps she and Logan were a match brought together by fate.
The four sat there for a while longer before Logan turned to Lorraine. "Let's head back. The kids have to go to kindergarten tomorrow."
Lorraine held Luna's hand while Logan held Finnegan's. As the two adults walked, Lorraine asked, "What time do they usually head to kindergarten? Which one do they go to? I'll drop them off tomorrow morning."
Logan had probably taken a cab to Cowtail Village. She hadn't seen any cars around when meeting him at the orchard earlier. She had a car and could drop the kids off.
"I've already taken care of it. Someone will come over to pick them up tomorrow morning," Logan said.
"Oh. Where do you stay?" She still had no idea where he lived.
He said, "I used to stay onsite, but the environment wasn't great for the kids and would affect their growth. Because of that, I decided to rent a two-room apartment near the construction site. It's also not far from the kindergarten, making it easy for me to ferry them to and fro."
"That's good." Lorraine didn't mention moving in with him. She couldn't bear to part with her orchards. She usually stayed at the orchard. She only returned home tonight because of him and the kids.
"Do you want to move in with us, Raine? Or we could move in with you. Your village is only an hour's drive from the city, and the kids won't be late for kindergarten if they leave the house early." Finnegan and Luna had to reach the kindergarten before 8:00 am, so Logan felt there was more than enough time.
Lorraine said, "No, that's too troublesome. Setting aside everything else, the amount you'll have to spend to get the kids to and from kindergarten will be huge.
"You work hard, and your money doesn't come easily. You should save wherever you can. Besides, I usually live in the orchard. I don't know whether the kids can get used to that."
"Home is where the heart is; children will only feel at home with their parents. Our situation isn't typical, and I think we should stay together as a family. Anyway, my place is in the suburbs, far from the busy city. Don't think we're so spoiled," Logan said.
The Moore residence—Moore Estate—was actually something of a resort in the mountains. It had plenty of fertile land where fruits and vegetables were planted. There was enough produce to feed the entire Moore family.
If one were to ignore the size of the estate, the Moore family would just be a regular family living in the countryside.
"I don't spend on much, Raine. It's worth it for me to pay a little extra on transport if our family can see each other daily," Logan said.
Lorraine was lost for words. Why did she just have to ask him about this? If she hadn't said anything, they probably wouldn't have to live together.
She thought he'd be away from home for extended periods because of his job and they would only be married on paper. Now, it looked like Logan genuinely wanted this marriage to work out.
Lorraine quickly adjusted her mindset. She had no intention of getting a divorce. It would be unreasonable and unrealistic to expect them not to live as husband and wife for the rest of their lives.
Ultimately, she said, "You can make the arrangements, then."
Logan smiled. "Okay."
He held Finnegan with one hand and reached for Lorraine's hand with the other. She instinctively wanted to tug her hand out of his but decided against it. They were already married. What did it matter if they held hands? His hand was callused, like hers.
…
The Somners were pleased to see the family of four return while holding hands. Naturally, when making sleeping arrangements, Irene had them all sleep in Lorraine's room.
Lorraine complained about this, "Mom, think about how cramped it'd be to have four people sleep on that tiny bed. We have plenty of rooms, don't we? You can have him and Finn share a room while Lulu sleeps in my room."
Irene placed a new pillow beside Lorraine's and said, "You call this a tiny bed when it's six feet wide? There's more than enough space for the four of you to sleep here! The kids may already be four, but this is their first time here.
"It's better to have them sleep with both their parents around in an unfamiliar environment. That way, they won't be scared."
"Mom, I heard that when a daughter returns to her parents' home with her husband, it's better for them to sleep in separate rooms."
"You and Logan haven't even held a wedding, so you're not considered married yet. You don't need to follow those dumb rules."
Lorraine fell silent. So, she wasn't married despite having already registered their marriage? If anyone wanted her two cents on this, she felt Irene couldn't wait to serve her to Logan on a silver platter.
Well, it didn't matter. She had a couch in her room, so Logan or herself could sleep there for the night. There was no way she could have sex with a stranger on the first night of their marriage.
They had to get to know each other better first, didn't they? Sex would only feel better when it happened naturally. Leaving each other with a good impression of it would help to improve their relationship.
Irene placed an extra blanket on the bed, saying, "Don't turn the A/C on too low tonight. I don't want my grandchildren to fall sick."
"I love turning the A/C on until it's freezing. If you're so worried about them falling sick, you can have them and Logan sleep in a guest bedroom," Lorraine quipped.
Irene smacked her shoulder and warned, "Don't pull any funny tricks!"
Lorraine rubbed her shoulder, muttering, "I've already married someone like you wanted. Can't you give me some freedom? Stop nagging me for once."
