I strode up to the leader, coolly assessing him. "Now, it's your turn. Show me what you've got. I'm all ears."
His bravado evaporated, and he stumbled, collapsing to the ground in a heap of fear.
"Kaelan!" May's voice pierced through the chaos as she hurried toward me. "Are you alright?"
I looked up, puzzled. "May, didn't you head home? What are you doing back here?"
"I heard you were in trouble and rushed over," she said, gripping my arm anxiously. "Are you hurt? Did any of your wounds reopen?"
Her concern was starting to grate on my nerves. I gently but firmly held her in place. "I'm fine. I've taken care of everything."
May's eyes widened in surprise. "Kaelan, what else don't I know about you?"
"Ms. Cabello, don't tell me you're being fooled by this loser. A guy like him doesn't deserve someone like you," the man on the ground spat with a mix of bitterness and disdain.
